Overview
**Spoiler Alert** Kafka, Leno, and Kikoru prepare for the second-stage Defense Force exam. Kikoru mocks Kafka’s kaiju stench, leading to awkward banter and Kafka flipping her van back upright. Leno warns Kafka for partially transforming again. The fitness test begins, with Kikoru outperforming everyone and Kafka ranking nearly last. Mina arrives to oversee the aptitude portion, which is revealed to involve live kaiju neutralization — a test that brings Kafka’s abilities and restraint to the forefront.
Plot
Opening
Kikoru questions Kafka’s kaiju smell. Kafka tries to downplay it, but Leno explains they work in kaiju cleanup. In response to her mocking, Kafka flips her car upright (having accidentally knocked it over in the last chapter), causing her to scowl.
Midpoint
Kafka awkwardly tries to introduce himself to Kikoru, but she tells him not to speak her name. Kafka struggles to explain away his transformation. Leno warns Kafka again for nearly exposing himself.
Climax
The second-stage exam begins with the fitness test. Kikoru dominates, placing first. Kafka ranks 219th out of 225. Leno expresses concern that Kafka didn’t use his kaiju strength — Kafka admits he didn’t want to be unfair, but regrets it now.
Aftermath
Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshina hands Mina the examinee list and discusses the standouts: Haruichi, Iharu, Aoi, and Kikoru. Meanwhile, Soshiro announces the real test — kaiju neutralization — shocking everyone.
