Overview
Iharu Furuhashi (古橋 伊春, Furuhashi Iharu) is a young officer in the Defense Force’s Third Division. Following the destruction of Tachikawa Base, he was reassigned to the Fourth Division.
Appearance
Iharu is a tall, athletic young man with messy pink hair shaved at the sides, orange eyes, and sharp teeth. In combat, he wears the standard Defense Force suit, and while on duty, he dons the regular uniform.
Personality
Iharu is a hot-blooded and proud individual who hates losing or being outdone, constantly pushing himself to surpass those he sees as stronger. Because of this, he often sets his sights on Reno Ichikawa, taking every chance to brag or challenge him. He is described as headstrong, yet also someone who brings energy and brightness to any environment.
Beneath his confident front, however, Iharu struggles with a deep-seated inferiority complex. Once accustomed to success in his earlier life, he now finds himself frustrated as his peers in the Defense Force advance faster than he does. In high-stakes, life-threatening situations, this insecurity surfaces—revealing a more vulnerable side and even admiration for those stronger than him, such as Reno.
Despite his pride, Iharu deeply values his teammates, even if he doesn’t openly admit it. Above all, he is determined and stubborn, refusing to quit and confronting every obstacle head-on in his pursuit of growth.
Plot
The Man Who Became a Kaiju Arc
Iharu placed third in the Defense Force's fitness test, driven by a desire to surpass Kikoru Shinomiya. During the aptitude test, he drew 14% from his suit but couldn’t keep up with Kikoru. After the exam and a related incident, he and others were detained, then later accepted into the Defense Force.
Sagamihara Neutralization Arc
Two months later, Iharu increased his suit output to 20% and bragged to Leno. That night, after overhearing gossip about Kafka and Captain Mina, the group overheated from excitement and fainted. A kaiju attack launched their first mission. In combat, Iharu was stunned by Leno’s rapid growth. When they faced the humanoid kaiju who had injured Kikoru, Iharu was wounded. Leno urged him to run, but he returned to help, struggling with feelings of inadequacy. As the kaiju overwhelmed them, Kaiju No. 8 appeared and saved them. Later, Iharu and Leno recovered and celebrated with the squad.
Raid on Tachikawa Base Arc
During the raid, Iharu and Leno fought off Wyvern-type kaiju. Iharu witnessed Kafka transform into Kaiju No. 8 to stop a Yoju-bomb.
Kaiju No. 8 Captured Arc
Kafka’s arrest shocked Iharu. When Mina asked them to transfer divisions due to the base’s destruction, Iharu agreed—determined to prove himself against Leno.
Kaiju Weapon Arc
After General Isao’s death, Iharu joined the Fourth Division in honoring him.
Compatible User Arc
Leno was chosen to wield Numbers Weapon 6. Iharu supported him during testing but struggled with self-doubt as Leno’s power grew. When Leno lost control in battle, Iharu broke through the ice, encouraged him, and helped devise a plan. He exposed the kaiju’s core so Leno could land the final blow. Afterward, they celebrated their victory in the infirmary. Later, Iharu called Kafka, admitting his fear of Kafka’s kaiju form—but still seeing him as a trusted comrade.

Overall Abilities: Iharu is a top-tier rookie in the Defense Force, known for his strength and determination. Before enlisting, he consistently ranked first in his class. In combat, he’s skilled enough to support fighters like Leno Ichikawa, even against high-level threats like Kaiju No. 9. His natural talent with the suit has drawn comparisons to elite officers like Captain Jugo Ogata.

High Unleashed Combat Power:
Iharu initially released 14% of his suit's power, later increasing to 20%, and now maintains a stable output of 24%—enough to keep pace with Leno and smash through thick ice. In battle, his power surges unpredictably, spiking up to 42% in seconds. Captain Ogata, who compared Iharu’s potential to his own, considers his combat output on par with Leno’s.
Iharu is the third known Flash Adapter—a rare case where a unique brain structure prevents sustained output, instead triggering explosive, short bursts of power. He's trained to enter brief combat trances to harness this ability, and Ogata believes that if mastered, Iharu’s rapid power spikes could surpass Leno's.
Enhanced Strength & Speed:
Iharu can break solid ice with ease, carry wounded allies over long distances, and dodge high-speed attacks from powerful kaiju during his combat surges.
Trivia
Iharu is into punk rock, motorcycles, tokusatsu heroes, and soda-flavored Gori Gori Kun—his version of the popular Gari Gari Kun popsicles. His hairstyle is inspired by characters from Naoya Matsumoto’s earlier works.

Iharu’s given name combines “伊” (i) meaning that one, and “春” (haru) meaning spring. His surname, Furuhashi, is made up of “古” (furu) meaning old or ancient, and “橋” (hashi) meaning bridge.
