Haruichi Izumo

Haruichi participated in the second-stage exam for the Defense Force, finishing second in the fitness test while keeping a close eye on Kikoru Shinomiya, curious about how he would measure up against her. During the aptitude test, he managed to draw 18% power from the Defense Force suit, but he was unable to match Kikoru’s performance. After the exam and the ensuing accident, he and the other examinees were taken into security, and a few days later, he was officially inducted as a member of the Defense Force.

Two months later, Haruichi and his peers underwent shooting training, during which he improved his combat abilities. That night, while talking in the bathroom about their motivations for joining the Defense Force, they overheated and fainted after a lively discussion about Kafka Hibino’s past with Captain Mina Ashiro. Their first mission quickly followed when a kaiju appeared. Haruichi and Aoi Kaguragi immediately demonstrated their exceptional fighting skills to their platoon leader, Nakanoshima, and later prepared to eliminate all the Yoju following Honju’s defeat.

After Reno Ichikawa and Iharu Furuhashi returned from the hospital, Kafka asked Haruichi to organize a celebration party for everyone’s first mission. Haruichi’s private chef, Dojima, prepared high-quality meat, and during the gathering, the Third Division members discussed the mission while Soshiro announced Kafka’s promotion to Officer of the Third Division. Following the party, Haruichi thanked Dojima, who inquired about his relationship with his father. Haruichi revealed that he had not spoken to his father since a certain event, though he was interrupted by Aoi. A few days later, Haruichi and his peers engaged in a private kendo training session observed by Metro TV journalists, where he sparred with Reno and the two praised each other’s skills.

During the raid, Haruichi, along with Aoi Kaguragi and Ryo Ikaruga, engaged the Wyvern-type kaiju under Kafka Hibino’s guidance. As he and Aoi were about to finish off a kaiju, another attacked Haruichi, who was saved by Kikoru Shinomiya’s unexpected ax strike. He later witnessed Kafka transform into Kaiju No. 8 to protect everyone from a Yoju-bomb.

After Kafka Hibino was taken into custody, Captain Ashiro instructed Haruichi and the others to transfer to a different division, as Tachikawa Base had been largely destroyed during the attack. Observing his peers accept the orders, Haruichi followed them, motivated by his desire to surpass Kikoru Shinomiya. While awaiting the transfer, he and Aoi spoke privately about Kafka’s situation, with Aoi mentioning his contacts in the JGSDF who might be able to vouch for him.

Following the death of Director General Isao Shinomiya at the hands of Kaiju No. 9, Haruichi and Aoi Kaguragi, together with their division, paid tribute to him.

Some time after the attack at Tachikawa Base, Haruichi sent a message to Kafka Hibino to check on his well-being. Several months later, Haruichi and Aoi Kaguragi discovered that Reno Ichikawa had become the first person in history compatible with Kaiju No. 6's weapon.

During the climax of the No. 9–triggered disasters across Japan, Aoi Kaguragi and Haruichi arrived in the Kasumigaseki Area to confront the Third Wave. As Aoi declared their arrival as new members of the Third Division, Haruichi fired his bow and arrows, taking down two kaiju from the Third Wave while reflecting on how their first battle after training was against a horde of Daikaiju.
