Appearance
Soshiro is an athletic young man of average height with a lean yet muscular build, short dark violet hair styled in a bob cut, and red eyes (purple in the anime) that are usually closed, giving him a jovial appearance. He typically maintains a cheerful expression, though in serious situations, he opens his eyes to reveal an intense and imposing look. He also has distinctive snaggletooth fangs that show when he speaks or laughs. On duty, Soshiro wears the standard Defense Force uniform, and in combat, he dons the regular Defense Force combat suit. When equipped with Numbers Weapon 10, his suit transforms into a light-purple armor with green outlines, scale-like plating, a long mechanical tail, and Kaiju No. 10’s signature eye on the chest plate. As a child, his appearance was largely the same, and he often wore a traditional training outfit.
Personality
Soshiro is a laid-back and cheerful individual who almost always wears a smile, rarely showing signs of discouragement. He enjoys teasing others, especially Kafka Hibino, whom he often treats as comic relief, and even jokes with Captain Gen Narumi of the First Division. Despite his relaxed and playful demeanor, Soshiro is sharp, observant, and deeply intuitive—he was the only one to correctly suspect Kafka’s true identity as Kaiju No. 8, which led him to personally accept Kafka into the Third Division to keep an eye on him. Beneath his easygoing nature lies a strong sense of loyalty to the Defense Force and immense gratitude toward his captain, Mina Ashiro, for giving him a place in her division. This loyalty runs so deep that Soshiro views his service as his life’s purpose.
He is also deeply connected to his family’s swordsmanship legacy. His father’s doubts and his feelings of inferiority toward his older brother, Soichiro Hoshina, pushed him to dedicate himself completely to mastering the blade. Even late at night, he trains alone, driven by determination and the memory of his battle with Kaiju No. 8. During his fight with Kaiju No. 12, Kaiju No. 10 forced Soshiro to confront his inner truth—that he fights not out of duty or insecurity, but because he simply enjoys wielding his sword. Despite the decline of sword-based combat and being looked down upon by others in the Defense Force, Soshiro remains steadfast in his belief that his swordsmanship is his purpose. His keen perception allows him to read his opponents’ mental states and sense the flow of battle, adapting his tactics instantly to turn the tide in his favor.
Trivia
Soshiro enjoys reading, drinking coffee, eating mont blanc, and prefers simple guys. He seems to be better at video games than Gen Narumi. When designing Soshiro’s SW-2033 twin swords, Matsumoto considered either a combat knife or a ninja sword before finalizing the design. Soshiro ranked #1 in the first character popularity polls. In the anime, his introduction occurs earlier than in the manga, with a cameo appearance in Episode 1. While equipped with Numbers Weapon 10, Soshiro’s maximum unleashed combat power reaches 100%, the highest in the entire series.

Numbers Weapon 10 (識別怪獣兵器10号, Nanbāzu Jū-gō)
Soshiro's personal Numbers Weapon, developed by Izumo Tech, is a specialized combat suit created from the body of Kaiju No. 10. The suit features light-purple, scale-like armor accented with green outlines, a long mechanical tail, and Kaiju No. 10’s distinctive eye embedded in the center of the chest plate. Notably, it is the first Numbers Weapon in Defense Force history to possess a will of its own, requiring synchronization between user and weapon to unlock its full potential.
Katana
Marked SW-1023, Soshiro wields a single katana as his secret weapon, a weapon type typically associated with his older brother, Soichiro. The blade is extremely sharp, capable of slicing cleanly through Kaiju No. 12 with ease. Additionally, Soshiro is shown to carry multiple backup katanas, ensuring he is always prepared for extended or high-intensity battles.
Twin Swords
Marked SW-2033 and provided by Izumo Tech, Soshiro’s personal weapons are a pair of twin swords. The blades are exceptionally sharp and durable, capable of slicing through extremely tough Kaiju such as Kaiju No. 8 and Kaiju No. 10. He is also shown to carry multiple backup swords, ensuring he remains prepared for prolonged or high-intensity combat.
