Overview
Kafka Hibino (Japanese: 日比野 カフカ, Hibino Kafuka), better known by his kaiju designation Kaiju No. 8 (怪獣8号, Kaijū Hachi-gō), serves as the central protagonist of the Kaiju No. 8 manga series.
Appearance
Kafka Hibino is a tall man with spiky dark brown hair, large eyes with small irises, thin eyebrows, and a mild goatee on his chin. He has a muscular build, though slightly softened by a pudgy stomach, and is most often seen with a cheerful, easygoing expression. During his time at Monster Sweeper Inc., he typically wore the company’s uniform: a grey coverall featuring the red Monster Sweeper logo on the chest.
In his kaiju form, Kafka’s body is primarily covered in coal-black scales and armor-like plates, with cyan energy radiating from the cracks, most visibly when preparing a powerful attack. His head, spine, and clavicles are exposed bone in stark white contrast, and large dorsal plates extend from the back of his head and neck, capped by a white top plate. His face resembles a demonic skull, complete with two short, thick horns, a hollow nasal cavity, and sharp exposed teeth that stretch down his neck. His eyes feature black sclera and glowing cyan irises, surrounded by cracks in the “mask,” with the left side notably fractured. His kaiju appearance has been compared to the armor and masks of fallen Meireki-era warriors.
When Kafka loses control of his powers, his kaiju form becomes more monstrous: his size increases relative to humans, horns elongate, dorsal plates grow more pronounced, his mouth stretches further down his neck, and his eyes turn fully cyan. In the anime adaptation, this berserk state also features four protrusions forming a cross shape on his back, an increase in height that forces a crouched stance, and cyan energy shifting to a menacing red. Later, after learning to briefly master this berserk state, Kafka retains a measure of composure, with pupils appearing whenever he speaks in the form.
Following the conversion of his heart into a Core to strengthen his bond with the Mysterious Larva, Kafka’s kaiju form undergoes a metamorphosis. His black scales shed away, leaving his body entirely white while still threaded with glowing energy cracks. His skull-horns become larger and curve inward, now bearing two small eyes along each curve, and his back develops four maple-leaf–shaped dorsal plates. After the climactic battle against the Meireki-era Daikaiju, Kafka’s appearance reverts to his original kaiju form when Isao Shinomiya transfers his heart into Kafka, merging with the Mysterious Larva.
Personality
Kafka Hibino displays a comically childish personality in most everyday situations, often making him the target of playful teasing from those around him. Despite this, he is shown to be determined and dependable when faced with serious circumstances, doing his utmost to succeed both for himself and for the sake of his comrades. His naturally kind and caring nature was evident even before joining the Defense Force, as he frequently went out of his way to help others—whether by offering practical solutions to their problems, rescuing them from danger, or scolding them for neglecting their own well-being.
Kafka is deeply motivated by a desire not to let down the people who place their trust in him. The thought of disappointing others often fuels his efforts, but it can also lead to insecurity and self-doubt whenever he feels unable to meet their expectations. This becomes especially apparent when he loses control of his kaiju form: the fear of harming others or becoming the very creature he despised as a child drives him to take drastic measures to prevent collateral damage. For a time, this fear even prevents him from willingly using his kaiju powers, until Kikoru Shinomiya reassures him to place trust in his allies and the Defense Force.
Additionally, Kafka is notably sensitive about his age. When referred to as an “old man” by younger characters, he often reacts with annoyance, quickly reminding them of his seniority in a half-serious, half-comedic manner.
Trivia
Kafka Hibino enjoys the Defense Force, curry, hamburgers, alcohol, and cigarettes (he abstained from smoking before joining the Defense Force). In his youth, he had a fondness for manga and video games, including a game called Guramon (グラモン), likely a parody of the Pokémon franchise.
Kafka’s kaiju form exhibits the unusual trait of causing him to urinate from his nipples.
After his transformation into a kaiju, Kafka’s heart was replaced with a core, the typical weak point present in kaiju physiology.
His name is likely a reference to Franz Kafka, author of The Metamorphosis. Similar to Gregor Samsa, Kafka is unexpectedly transformed into a giant creature and must adapt to his new form; notably, both discover their transformations while attempting to get out of bed.
Kafka possesses the highest Fortitude level observed in the series so far, at 9.8, while ironically maintaining the lowest percentage of released power as a Defense Force officer, at 1% (previously 0%).
He ranked #4 in the first character popularity poll, while his kaiju form ranked #8.
After visiting the Ryunei Shrine, Kafka perceives a samurai-like figure, which reappears during his subsequent fight with No. 9 and the return of the Meireki Era Daikaiju.
Kafka Hibino appears as a Fortnite skin, along with a Kaiju No. 8–themed variant.
