The Daikaiju of the Meireki Era

明暦の大怪獣

Meireki no Daikaijū

Appearance

This entity appears as a massive amalgamation kaiju composed of the body parts of various monsters. Its main head features a human-like face with ten eyes arranged in three vertical rows and a small mouth at the bottom, notably lacking a nose. The shoulders and upper body are formed from multiple kaiju heads, while two pairs of arms sprout from its back. It also possesses an extremely long tail and a mouth located in the middle of its back, which opens only when it roars.

In its current fused form with Kaiju No. 9, it resembles No. 9’s previous form prior to absorbing Kaiju No. 2, featuring a large vertical opening extending from its head to its pubis. Inside this opening are numerous eyes belonging to the Meireki Daikaiju, with four fingers from No. 9’s chest holding the gap open. This form also exhibits a long, pointed tail and four pairs of arms—three more than No. 9’s original configuration.

Personality

The Daikaiju of the Meireki Era is an extremely destructive force, behaving like a wild kaiju that unleashes its full power to wreak havoc. It has demonstrated the ability to attract other kaiju and establish a symbiotic relationship with them, amplifying its threat. After its core was destroyed, Kaiju No. 9 revealed that it would henceforth become “a beast that only destroys,” underscoring its relentless and unstoppable drive for destruction.

Upon realizing that Kaiju No. 8 embodied the accumulated resentment of the warriors it had slain centuries ago, the Meireki Daikaiju exhibited its first sign of sentience, laughing as it acknowledged that those it had killed had returned through this new form.

Plot

The Compatible User Arc

While visiting Ryunei Shrine for training, Soshiro Hoshina and Kafka Hibino discussed the history of the shrine and the catastrophic events that had occurred centuries earlier due to the Daikaiju of the Meireki Era.

The Last Wave Arc

After an intense and grueling battle, Kaiju No. 8 succeeded in destroying Kaiju No. 9’s core, prompting No. 9 to initiate a “final conversation.” Within No. 9’s mind, No. 8 witnessed the kaiju admit defeat, reflecting on its lifelong curiosity about humans, which had now come to an end. However, No. 8 soon observed a mass of kaiju emerging from No. 9’s body, as No. 9 declared that it would now become “a beast that only destroys.” At that moment, the Daikaiju of the Meireki Era appeared before No. 8.

Emerging from No. 9’s mind, Kaiju No. 8 was severely injured by the lifeless body of its opponent. In a final desperate attack, two circles of runes manifested on No. 8’s arm and chest, blasting him away and leaving him seemingly dead. Following this, No. 9 fused with the Meireki Era Daikaiju into a new form, destroying Mina Ashiro’s cannon and causing runes to appear on her body as well.

Trivia

💡

When Soshiro and Kafka first referenced this kaiju, it appeared in a form vastly different from its true appearance, resembling a large, lizard-like quadrupedal beast with a long, pointed tail. This was later revealed to be a disguise assumed by the Meireki Era Daikaiju to conceal itself before unveiling its full form. In-universe, this kaiju is attributed as the cause of the Great Fire of Meireki, a historical event in which approximately 70% of Tokyo was destroyed on March 2, 1657.
