Overview
Jugo Ogata (緒方ジュウゴ, Ogata Jūgo) serves as the captain of the Defense Force’s Fourth Division.
Appearance
Jugo is a tall, middle-aged man with short black hair, thin eyebrows, and a thick goatee. His eyes have small green pupils.
In combat, he wears the standard Defense Force uniform.
As a young man, he was slimmer, clean-shaven, and had a more refined appearance.
Personality
Jugo comes across as calm and easygoing, often trying to keep the peace among his more hot-headed fellow captains. He doesn’t mind bending protocol—drinking on duty or casually plucking nose hairs included.
But beneath the laid-back exterior, Jugo fully understands the dangers of his role. He prioritizes his team’s safety, driven by lasting guilt over the death of Hikari Shinomiya. Having once encouraged her down a path that led to her demise, he now does everything he can to avoid putting another comrade in harm’s way.
Plot

The Kaiju Weapon Arc

The Compatible User Arc
During the Anti–No. 9 Eastern Divisional Conference, Jugo and the other division captains reviewed intel obtained from Kaiju No. 10, relayed by Soshiro Hoshina. Later in the meeting, it was decided that Reno Ichikawa—now a member of Ogata’s division—would be the next candidate to wield Numbers Weapon 6.
Jugo discussed the decision privately with his subordinate, Toko, before informing Reno. Though Jugo personally advised him to decline the offer, the Fourth Division still supported Reno throughout the process. When Reno passed out from the strain of synchronizing with the weapon, Jugo visited him in the infirmary and once again urged him to reconsider. But seeing Reno's resolve, Jugo agreed to give him one month to master the weapon.
A month later, Jugo and the Fourth Division tested Reno by pitting him against a pack of Mole-Type 67 kaiju. Reno successfully defeated them all. However, as he pushed his body to its limits to take down the Honju, Jugo recognized the risk and prepared to intervene with Toko, ready to call the trial a failure. But before they could act, Iharu stepped in to motivate Reno, convincing Jugo to hold off.
Jugo then watched as Iharu unleashed a burst of unstable released force, resembling Jugo’s own power. Together, Iharu and Reno managed to defeat the Honju. Overcome with emotion, Jugo teared up, reflecting on his past and the new generation of talent under his command.
Later, he contacted Third Division Captain Mina Ashiro to report on Reno and Iharu’s progress, vowing to shape them into top-tier soldiers—honoring his role as a survivor and mentor.
Trivia
Jugo enjoys reading, drinking—especially sake—eating soba, and river fishing.
According to Naoya Matsumoto, Jugo’s heavy drinking is a deliberate character trait meant to mask something deeper behind his cheerful demeanor.
